Friends of the Jesuits Golf Outing 2017

Sept. 28, 2017 – On Tues., Sept. 26, 2017, more than 100 golfers and supporters attended the 8th Annual Friends of the Jesuits Golf Outing at the beautiful Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.

Over the past eight years, the Friends of the Jesuits Golf Outing has raised over $2 million to support men in formation and senior Jesuits. This year was special in that it recognized the life and work of Fr. James Keenan, SJ. Earlier this year, Fr. Keenan celebrated his 80th birthday and 60th year since entering the Society of Jesus. After registering for the day, guests had the opportunity to talk with Fr. Keenan as well as other Jesuits and members of the province staff.

When the golfers completed the course, they gathered for a reception where they had the chance to catch up with one another and representatives from the province. They were then treated to a rendition of Amazing Grace played on bagpipes in honor of Fr. Keenan.

Fr. John Cecero, SJ, the provincial of the USA Northeast Province, thanked donors and talked about what the province is able to do thanks to the support from the outing.

“You’ll see in the room this evening several Jesuit scholastics…we call them our spes gregis: hope of the flock. The formation of these men lasts between nine and twelve years, and is something that is funded entirely through the province office, and your participation today certainly helps us to support them," said Fr. Cecero. “We Jesuits and our works can flourish because of friends like you...thank you, and God Bless you.”

The guests were then treated to a lively auction and placed bids for the chance to play on some of the best golf courses in the country. Group awards were given out for foursomes with the best scores. The award for low net was given to Mike McCallister, Mike Ferraro, Jack Traynor and Damian Quinn and the award for low gross was given to Dan Denihan Jr., Jay Jalbert, Sean Denihan and Kealan O’Reilly.

The evening ended with a special birthday cake for Fr. Keenan and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday led by the Ignatian Schola.

This year’s outing was yet another resounding success. We are grateful to our friends who supported the outing through their participation, sponsorships and donations.
